Hearing Tests at Prodigy ENT & Hearing Clinic

The impacts of hearing loss on a person’s daily life can vary widely. As with any medical condition, each person’s hearing loss is unique and treatment should examine many factors, including: age, environment, possible causes and the degree of loss.

At Prodigy ENT, we are fully staffed with a number of experts to help you get the hearing care you need. When you schedule a hearing test at our hearing center, you can expect a personalized, comfortable and highly advanced approach.

Hearing Health Consultation

If you are experiencing hearing loss, the first step to take is scheduling a consultation with a hearing professional. The first appointment will generally consist of a hearing test with the Audiologist and a consultation with the Otolaryngologist. Hearing tests are noninvasive, pain-free and provide detailed information about your hearing and can lead the way to diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss.

Causes of Hearing Loss

Because there are a number of causes of hearing loss, our Audiologists will talk with you about your medical history and any hobbies or activities that may negatively impact your hearing. Some common causes of hearing loss include:

  • Aging, called presbycusis
  • Conditions like Meniere’s disease
  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Accidents that damage the head or ear
  • Genetic hearing loss

Your medical history can help us as professionals to better understand the cause of hearing loss and what factors may contribute to your hearing loss.

The Hearing Test

Hearing tests should be performed in a sound booth. The patient wears earphones and the Audiologist will have you repeat words and then present tones to the ears. Your responses will be recorded and will help establish a baseline audiogram, indicating the frequencies and volume levels at which you hear.

The results of a hearing test are printed on a graph – an audiogram – and can then be used to determine the type of hearing loss and allow us to make the appropriate recommendations for treatment. The hearing test is only one part of the puzzle. The hearing exam, listening lifestyle and personal needs of the patient must be assessed in order to effectively make a recommendation about the proper treatment.

Prodigy ENT and Audiology strongly believes it is important that hearing tests be completed by an Audiologist in a sound booth. Audiologists have the knowledge and experience to provide you with the follow-up care individually appropriate to you and your needs. Testing completed outside of a sound booth can be unreliable.
